What a sewer camera inspection actually shows — 6 real findings from Greenville County

Most homeowners have never seen sewer camera footage before we show it to them at the cleanout. They expect it to be murky and uninformative — the plumbing equivalent of a blurry ultrasound. What they actually see surprises them.

Modern sewer cameras produce clear, colorful, well-lit footage. You can see the pipe wall texture, the joint connections, the debris, the roots. You can see exactly what’s there and exactly where it is. And when we’re done, you have footage and a written report to keep.

Here are the six findings that show up most often when we camera a Greenville County lateral — what each one looks like on screen, what it means, and what happens next.

Finding 1: Root intrusion at a joint

What it looks like

The camera moves smoothly through the pipe and then hits a wall of fibrous material — dense, hair-like roots that have grown inward from a joint gap. Sometimes it’s a small tendril cluster. In older Five Forks and Woodruff Road laterals we sometimes find root masses filling 70 or 80 percent of the pipe cross-section.

What it means: A tree root — usually loblolly pine, sweetgum, or water oak — found a displaced joint and grew into it. The root is not the primary problem. The displaced joint it entered through is. Cutting the root without sealing the joint means it regrows through the same opening, faster.

What happens next: Hydro jet clearing to remove the mass, then CIPP assessment to determine if the host pipe can take a liner. If it can, CIPP lining seals the joint permanently. Root cycle ended. No re-entry.

Finding 2: Offset joint

What it looks like

The pipe cross-section on screen is off-center. One wall is closer to the camera than the other. You can see a gap at the joint where the pipe sections didn’t re-align after soil movement. Minor offsets look like a slight lean. Significant offsets look like the pipe is trying to turn a corner where there isn’t one.

What it means: Cecil clay movement shifted the pipe. This is the most common structural finding we make on pre-1990 Simpsonville laterals. Minor offsets — under 20 percent displacement — are monitorable. Significant offsets restrict flow, accelerate root entry, and need intervention.

What happens next: We measure the offset and document its location in feet from the cleanout. Slight offsets get a “monitor” note and a follow-up recommendation. Significant offsets get a CIPP assessment — the liner bridges the gap and smooths the interior. Severe offsets sometimes require spot excavation.

Finding 3: Belly section

What it looks like

The camera goes down. Then it comes back up. Standing water at the low point. The pipe has a sag — a low spot where the grade is wrong, either from original installation error or from soil settlement over time.

What it means: Solids accumulate at the belly. Grease, paper, debris — it all settles at the lowest point and builds up over years. Bellies don’t usually cause immediate backup but they make everything else worse and will eventually cause backup on their own.

What happens next: CIPP cannot fix a belly — it would line the wrong shape in place. Belly sections require excavation to correct grade at the specific point. The camera tells us the exact depth and location so excavation is targeted, not exploratory.

Finding 4: Orangeburg pipe

What it looks like

This is unmistakable once you’ve seen it. Orangeburg pipe — a tar-and-fiber material used in Simpsonville residential construction from roughly 1945 to 1973 — shows a pipe interior that is no longer round. The walls appear layered, peeling inward. In advanced delamination the pipe cross-section is almost oval, the walls are separating, and sections of the pipe wall have folded inward.

What it means: The material is failing. Orangeburg was made from post-World War II scrap paper and pitch — it was always a temporary material that outlasted its intended lifespan because nobody replaced it. When it goes, it doesn’t crack. It collapses from the inside.

What happens next: Orangeburg cannot be reliably lined. Full lateral replacement is almost always the right answer. The camera footage shows the extent of delamination, so the replacement quote is based on documented footage, not a guess.

⚠️ Do not snake a suspected Orangeburg lateral. Mechanical snaking through a deteriorated Orangeburg pipe can collapse the wall. If your Simpsonville home was built before 1973, camera first before any other service. This is not optional.

Finding 5: Pipe material identification

What it looks like

The camera shows the pipe interior texture clearly. Clay pipe has a rough, granular interior surface. PVC is smooth and white or grey. Orangeburg is layered and off-color. Cast iron has a rough, darker interior. Mixed-material laterals — not uncommon in Simpsonville homes that had partial repairs over the decades — show visible material transitions.

What it means: Knowing your pipe material changes everything about repair options. CIPP works well in clay. It works in PVC. It does not work reliably in Orangeburg. Cast iron laterals have their own assessment pathway. A plumber who quotes repair without knowing your pipe material is guessing.

What happens next: Material identification is documented in the written report. Every repair recommendation we make is specific to the pipe material the camera confirmed.

Finding 6: Groundwater infiltration

What it looks like

Water entering the pipe from outside — through a joint gap or a crack — shows as a steady seep or a small stream entering from the pipe wall. Post-Helene inspections in the Durbin Creek and Rocky Creek corridors have shown elevated infiltration in homes that had no prior evidence of groundwater entry.

What it means: Your sewer lateral is allowing groundwater in. This adds volume the system wasn’t designed for. During heavy rain events, infiltration can overwhelm the lateral and cause backup even when the pipe is otherwise clear. It also means your joint gaps are large enough for water to push through — which is the same gap roots use.

What happens next: CIPP lining seals infiltration points effectively. The liner creates a continuous waterproof tube inside the host pipe, eliminating every joint gap simultaneously.

What the report looks like

After the inspection, we give you a written report that documents every finding — location in feet from the cleanout, pipe material, condition rating, and recommended action. You also get the footage. The report is formatted so you can use it for real estate transactions, insurance documentation, or as a baseline for future inspections.

Most homeowners who haven’t seen sewer camera footage before are surprised by two things: how clear it is, and how specific the location data is. When we say “root intrusion at 34 feet,” we mean 34 feet from your cleanout. Not “somewhere in the middle.” Not “probably near the tree.” Thirty-four feet. That precision is what makes the repair decision straightforward rather than speculative.
